So on Sunday I go to the car boot sale in Lewes. It is being rebranded as car boot flea vintage sale so I thought I’d pop along and see if it is worth doing. It seems to be.
Lo and behold selling from the side of a white van was former coalition Government minister and local MP, Norman Baker.
A member of the ill fated Cameron coalition government. A government that will go down in history as having a Chancellor of the Exchequer ‘Gideon’ Osborne who wrecked the British economy for a generation whils’t lining the pockets of the rich and a leader in ‘Slimy’ Cameron who ruined the country by taking us out of Europe in a failed attempt to tame Tory rebels, including that loathsome piece of scum Rees Mogg (sorry couldn’t help it).
So as the cabinet aka ‘gang of tossers’ split up and took up their grossly overpaid directorships Baker went and worked for the The Big Lemon, a green bus company promoting bio fuels as Managing Director and started a blues band. He has resigned from that position now and seemingly out doing car boot sales. Well he was clearly just having a clear out and didn’t give a shit about being seen as a lowly Sunday morning car booter. That is because he is actually a man of integrity and highly respected in the town. He was very good MP for us, did stuff for me on a few occasions. But it was poignant to see. Because Lewes is going through a process of gentrification and Norman Baker doing a boot fair wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow 15 years ago, he is one of us and been a proper part of the Lewes community.
Now Lewesians are leaving and being replaced by the derided DFL’s, down from London. Middle aged, middle class families buying into the ‘trendy’ Lewes and ruining it in the process, as they pour into all of the new fake generic eateries putting things like pubs that make the town out of business. It would have trending around the DFL bbq’s this hot weekend ‘guess what Norman Baker has ended up doing the local boot fair’ whereas proper Lewesians couldn’t care less and respect him for all the work he did for us and for being the smart and talented man he is and frankly for having no airs and graces.
Okay, I agree, serving in the coalition Government was not an act of integrity and was the reason ‘Stormin’ Norman was kicked out as local MP. The Lib Dems went into electoral meltdown due to the pact. But he should be remembered for how well prior to that he represented us, as a proper Lewes person and only 2 weeks ago he was on the Today programme as he is incredibly astute and still a person of enormous kudos in politics as well as down to earth. He used to turn at Lewes FC and get routinely booed doing presentations but shrugged it off with grace and humour. I understand his blues band are shite though
