Election 2024 – The Two Horse Race For Donkeys. 1/11/22 Chris Harris

We are a week into the tenure of Rishi Sunak. Making a better fist of it than Liz Truss was always a no-brainer for any MP. But in the appointment of Suella Braverman and his decision to ignore Cop27 in Egypt next month already shows signs of indecisiveness. Braverman should not be anywhere near the post of Home Secretary and is in post purely to placate the right of the party. You can appoint sensible MP’s to the right of the party, why this almost maverick incompetent. Cop27 cop-out is simply ridiculous for a country trying to forge a new identity after Brexit not to attend such a huge international event is mere evidence of how tin pot we are becoming.
However within 6 days of his appointment and he has brushed aside Keir Starmer in the polls and taken the lead with trust over managing the economy. The Conservatives are still hugely slumping in the polls behind Labour but with two years to go it is a great start.
It was only a few weeks ago the centre left journos were crowing over the foregone conclusion of the next election. At least a handful of us on the comment sections in the Guardian pooped the party and explained the bleedin’ obvious.
The UK’s chief procrastinator Kier and his ‘advisors’ it would appear are maybe waking up to the reality that you do need to offer an alternative economic policy rather than the eagerly anticipated Labour 2024 Election Manifesto ‘We’ll Wait and See’
Because when you cannot afford to lay your bills you need the opposition to reach out to you and say how they will help and do things differently. Saying we cannot have a policy yet as the finances are such a mess will go down as one of the greatest political follies in political history. Even Starmer’s admirers Blair and Mandelson appear to be ripping their hair out in frustration at the inertia at the top.
I think as things are by the 2024 election the Tories will have fought back close to parity in the polls and will edge the election based on ‘better the devil you know.’
Anything can happen, Labour are supposed to be sharpening up. Josh Simons has been appointed head of Labour Together and recognises improvement is needed. I really am not convinced he is the man to spearhead those improvements. He strikes me, reading about him, as someone who like Sir Keir will be too cautious and forensic. To be honest Labour actually really need a rocket up their behinds as complacency could be their undoing.
