For years, Lewes FC has positioned itself as a beacon of progressive values—championing gender equality, inclusivity, and social justice. The club has vocally opposed prejudice and discrimination, presenting itself as a leader in ethical football. Yet, a closer look reveals a contradiction that undermines these claims: its continued presence on Twitter (now X).
A Club of Conviction—or Convenience?
Lewes FC prides itself on making principled decisions, such as pulling out of the Murky13 deal due to a values mismatch. However, this same scrutiny appears absent when it comes to engaging with Elon Musk’s platform, which has become a hub for hate speech, misinformation, and right-wing extremism.
If Lewes FC truly believed in the values it promotes, wouldn’t it have left Twitter months ago? Many progressive organizations and the Lewes FC Supporters Club have already transitioned to Bluesky. The club, however, remains silent and inactive, missing a crucial opportunity to take a stand.
A Pattern of Inaction
The inconsistency goes beyond social media. Lewes FC’s leadership, despite fronting the Equality FC initiative, has failed to demonstrate real commitment when it matters most. When a woman was assaulted outside the club, meaningful action was left to Sussex Police and the local MP—a glaring example of selective activism.
Even within its own ranks, the Equality FC leadership is entirely male. If the club genuinely sought to lead by example, wouldn’t it ensure gender diversity at the highest level? The failure to do so suggests that equality is more of a branding tool than a core value.
Twitter: A Cesspit of Hate—Yet Still in Use
Under Elon Musk’s ownership, Twitter has devolved into a megaphone for discrimination and far-right propaganda. Despite this, Lewes FC has refused to set a departure timeline, reduce its activity, or promote an alternative platform like Bluesky. Here the fanzine, Supporters Club, and any other decent liberal organization worth its salt is sheltering under the umbrella from Musk and his shower of shit. Other progressive organizations have done so—why not Lewes FC?
What Should Lewes FC Do?
- Publicly announce an exit from Twitter—with a clear timeline.
- Transition to Bluesky and encourage followers to join.
- Revamp its social media strategy to align with its progressive messaging.
- Demonstrate commitment beyond words by ensuring gender equality in leadership.
Time to Choose: Genuine Principles or PR Stunts?
Lewes FC has spent years cultivating an image of ethical leadership. However, when faced with a real test, it has failed spectacularly. If the club refuses to act, it will confirm what many suspect: its progressive stance is little more than a convenient marketing tool.
The time for excuses is over. Lewes FC must practice what it preaches—or risk losing credibility altogether.
